As the sun begins to set earlier and the school bells ring once more, the transition back to school can be both exciting and difficult for campers. Especially after spending time at camp, where they may have had a more laid-back schedule and specialized care. However, with some thoughtful planning and preparation, the shift can go more smoothly for students.

So, here are some important tips to help children navigate this transition and make the most of their summer camp journey throughout the academic year!

1. Emphasize the skills & values learned at camp

Summer camp teaches many valuable life lessons and skills such as leadership, problem-solving, teamwork, and independence, and these skills will be beneficial to campers throughout the school year and beyond.

For instance, at Camp Mah-Kee-Nac, our core values are respect, friendship, shared pride, perseverance, and leadership. Every Friday evening during the summer months, our campers “huddle” around a bonfire to take the time to discuss these values, what they look and feel like, what behaviors they are represented by, and how they make us a strong community. Our huddles also allow us to take some time to reflect and appreciate everything that is going on around us.

No matter what camp your children attend, you should encourage them to consider the new abilities they have learned there and apply those skills in an academic situation. Whether it was learning how to overcome obstacles as a team or developing confidence to do new things, the social components of school and camp can be remarkably similar.

2. Maintain friendships made at camp

No doubt that the relationships made with other campers are among the most treasured aspects of summer camp. Especially throughout the years at Camp Mah-Kee-Nac, we have seen several meaningful bonds of brotherhood form. The activities here allow boys to build friendships with fellow campers of all age groups and contribute to the sense of family and community.

To sustain these friendships throughout the school year, we encourage campers to stay in touch with their friends from camp. Seeing familiar faces can promote a feeling of belonging and lessen the nerves associated with being back to school. To strengthen these bonds outside the camp, plan playdates of get-togethers with fellow campers. Mah-Kee-Nac organizes huddles throughout the year in various locations across the country, where campers can reconnect and stay in touch before the next camp season!

3. Establish a set routine

As the academic year is in full swing, it is important to reestablish a regimented pattern. At Camp Mah-Kee-Nac, generally we follow the same daily schedule format (except for rain and special event days). Following a set schedule gives campers assurance and reduces anxiety as they know what to anticipate. You can achieve this by setting regular wake-up and bedtimes, which ensures that campers feel well-rested for the early mornings. Also, reducing screen time by an hour or so before your child’s bedtime can help them unwind and fall asleep easier.

Involve your young children in the school day preparations by encouraging them to help prepare nutritious breakfast and lunch options and select their outfits for the next day. This helps them look forward to their meals and mornings, and will allow for more independence as a result.

4. Encourage open communication

Children might encounter new social and intellectual obstacles during the school year. So, as parents and educators, it is critical to establish a supportive environment for campers to share their thoughts and feelings. You can help them feel values and accepted by paying close attention to what they say and by showing that you understand their feelings.

5. Integrate camp lessons into academics

In the classroom, teachers can reinforce the skills that children learned at summer camp. To promote a sense of camaraderie, motivate students to share their perspectives and experiences with their peers. Utilize collaborative group activities that promote teamwork and establish connections to the camp experiences.

6. Plan for extracurricular activities

While at Camp Mah-Kee-Nac, many of our boys who attend take full advantage of the variety of activities that we have to offer. They understand that camp serves them a safe space to explore a wide range of interests, including our media and arts program, waterfront spots, and MAK Adventure program.

Throughout the school year, campers should seek out extracurricular activities that match their interests. Campers can continue to grow personally outside the camp setting by participating in extracurricular activities such as joining a team, taking part in a school club, or occupying a hobby. These pursuits can also be a means of meeting new people who have similar interests.

7. Give it time, but seek help if needed

Remembering that the transition back to school is a process is important, and it may take some time for kids to fully adjust. Parents should be patient and understanding and to work with their kids to look back on their summer camp experience as a time of growth and fun.

Children who have trouble adjusting to change or interacting with others may require additional help and guidance. Most schools, just like camp, have people in place to help support and reassure students through this transition.

Ultimately, summer camp is an experience that they will carry with them for a lifetime, and it is important to help them keep the summer camp spirit alive throughout the school year!
